News: The Book of Broken Dreams

The Book of Broken Dreams It hit me the other day when thumbing through my old book of slides that I have a backlog of easily a hundred photos that never got used or printed. Bad for the skaters who's photos never saw the light of day, good for us. Welcome to the book of broken dreams: 1. Mike Rosa-Gaps out to a frontside nosegrinds in Orlando, circa 1999 2. Sean Mullendore-Backside tailslide in Bosont, circa 1999 3. Allen Russell-Backside tailslides in Tampa, circa 1997

That Allen Russell photo was one of my personal favorites. I think it actually ran in a Slap article of some sort. That building has since been demolished and is now a massive hotel. Tampa used to have some character.

not what it used to be, but there is still some character

Actually, what I was referring to was the city itself. Downtown used to have a bit more life to it though, before they came through and bulldozed most of it’s older buildings to erect condos and hotels. But you’re right, there still is a little character left. Ybor city and the remaining old cigar factories still keep a spectre of Tampa’s history alive here and there. But, still, Tampa has pretty much become a stucco, strip mall and condo wasteland.

The reason they never got ran is because it looks like someone took a magic marker and scribbled over that Mike Rosa photo(or is that Florida pixie dust?). Plus it’s too dark. The Mullendore photo never got ran cause his nose is scraping the ground on that back t. I think back t’s sit horizontal, not vertical. And the last photo, well shit, for one it looks like a movie set of New York(or is that the New York, New York Casino in Vegas?), and two, I think his nose is scraping the ground as well(unlike mine which is poised high in the air), although his back tail is propped up properly, the photo’s just mossing a third stair. Combine the 2nd and third photos and you might have made Photo Grafitti. Sometimes people should know when things on two stairs will prolly look dope in a line at night on video, but make a ridiculous photograph. Thanks for the mammaries though, next.

I’m not sure if Orlando has ever had any “character,” just a bunch of yuppies. I still liked the photo of Rosa though. That is not an easy spot to skate.

Haters have too much time on their hands and not enough motivation or drive to do anything productive of their own.
Go to that Boston spot and do a noseslide and I’ll give you my website. The “magic marker” is streaking lights for added illness and effect. The Big Al Russell photo is from a time when Tampa still had a lot of it’s original 1920’s architecture standing. You’re a doof if you think that New York is the only city with that aesthetic.
If you’ve ever been to New Orleans, Savannah, Chicago, Philly, DC, Tampa, or anywhere in the rust belt, you’d see very similar characteristics.
over half of the Static III intro was shot in downtown Tampa and Ybor City.

“over half of the Static III intro was shot in downtown Tampa and Ybor City.” I’ll bet money that’s an exaggerated and a flat out false statement. And for the record, “epiclyhaterd” ain’t me.

19. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on August 09 at 04:32 PM

Ok, I got 13 shots in the intro, 12 if you count the one that is shown back to back as one. I got 6 shots that are definitely NY, 3 that are possibly, and 4 that are definitely not. How’d I fare?

20. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on August 09 at 04:55 PM

Oh and by the way, “added illness”.

21. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on August 09 at 04:56 PM

Sweet Jesus, you’ve got way too much time on your hands.
Ok…let’s see here:
6 shots Tampa, 7 shots NY.
Oh my GOD!
Seriously, we should crucify me. Nail me to a cross and set me afire.
Seriously, I should be excommunicated from skate-church.
I’m a heathen.
A few of the NY shots could’ve been shot in Jersey, Kansas or fucking Botswana for how plain the architecture is. There are only roughly 4 shots in there that have a NY aesthetic and are actually SHOT in NY.
But, alas, get out your nails and torches. It’s burnin’ time.

who are these people?  why does anyone give a fuck where these ancient skate photos were shot?

23. by Bryan on August 09 at 08:12 PM

Bryan, are you fucking serious right now? Do you fucking read?

24. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on August 10 at 06:30 AM

Bryan, you have the audacity to dismiss photos of some of the illest skaters from the East and you run THIS park? http://www.chskate.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=11&Itemid=19

I think you need to log the fuck off and go buy some Skate-Lite, at least. You’ve got to be kidding me. Your park is gross.

25. by Truthiness. on August 10 at 07:46 AM

It’s not exactly that Bryan “dismissed” the photos of some of the “illest”(can we stop using this word please?) skaters from the East, it’s that he didn’t think before making an asinine comment. Essentially what Bryan did is he confused people caring about the location of the spots in the photos when the subject of my comment was the exaggeration of Stewart’s comment on the locale of intro shots in his Stadick 3. I simply pointed out an obvious falsehood, and this string bean either didn’t read my comment properly before posting his reply or he’s a moron like most “skateboarders” these days who care the least about integrity, quality control, ethics and history(just to name a few). By the look of his link(and the fact that he even posted a link), I’m gonna go with the latter. Sorry Bryan.
Now, in regards to the park in tha link and the comment concerning his “audacity”, I’m sure Bryan didn’t design or build his town’s park(or maybe he did, I didn’t look at the park), but who cares, the park’s design says nothing about Bryan’s character or intelligence or whether he should be allowed to post on this website or not(although it does say something about contributing to polluting of skateboarding on the internet. Stop Internet Pollution, or S.I.P. fo short.) Remember, diversity of belief is a virtue, not a sin. Also remember though that some beliefs are unfounded and made flat out, out of bad taste.
That said Stewart, I would look into using terms like “almost”, “virtually”, or “nearly”, before you go making blanket statements that are wrong. It damages your reputation and hurts your integrity, not to mention forces you to defend yourself which you don’t do gracefully. Plus it doesn’t burn so much. Anyhow, what’s up with that Ed Selego quote? Talk about awkward.

Oh yeah, and one other thing, who are you to comment and criticize how people spend their time? How do you know that “Haters have too much time on their hands and not enough motivation or drive to do anything productive of their own.” How do you know what “haters” have done and then judge exactly what is “productive”? Hell, to me, the best part about your website(I suppose you consider this “time worthy” and a “productive venture”) is the so-called “haters” who post on here.

Remember when responding,(straw men make spectacular fires), my comment has or had nothing to do with the aesthetic quality of any architecture or city’s architecture in particular, it’s about making false claims, the language of false claims, and lying and deceiving your audience, especially when in positions of influence.

29. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on August 10 at 10:34 AM

If we really wanted to get into a debate about depicting the architecture in the intro, I would start with the number of shots that include Rosenwach water tanks, something totally unique to the skyline of NY. But that’s neither here nor there.

I like these photos.

32. by Bryan on August 10 at 03:08 PM

Our park is self-funded in a poor, essentially third world country.  We have no money and we did it ourselves.  Shit comes hard in the Bahamas, buddy.  Clearly you don’t know that.  If your mad at us for trying to build skateboarding where there is none, then your heart is truly black.  We’re trying to keep poor Bahamian youth from raping chicks and selling crack on every corner, like most of em’ do.  Don’t go spouting off about things you know not about.  Just wanted to get that straight.

I like these pictures, always good to see some Allen Russel shit, and I just don’t understand why you’re on a dude’s blog, nitpicking and telling him why his photos suck.

In retrospect, I shouldn’t have said anything. And no, I didn’t really read your comment thoroughly, because this is the internet, and it’s silly.  Take it easy, there.

That is all.

33. by Bryan on August 10 at 03:21 PM

Again Bryan, you’re misdirecting your comment to the wrong person. I didn’t criticize you for your park or your opinion on caring where a photo is shot, I criticized you for not not thinking before you spoke. No one is nitpicking, and everyone is on here for the same reasons. If your reasoning is “I just don’t understand why you’re on a dude’s blog, nitpicking and telling him why his photos suck”, then I don’t understand why you’re on a dude’s blog, nitpicking and telling him why his photos are good to see. It’s the same shit. It’s called exercising an opinion and it’s perfectly fine to do. I mean really, if this is the internet, and it’s silly, then why bother either way?
