News: 16 Years of Tampa Am

Out of 16 years of Tampa Am and Pro contests, I've found myself filming all but 2 years worth. It's always a grueling weekend to shoot the entire contest, but you get a glimpse of skaters from around the world and get to see them actually skate in person. Sometimes it's the skaters who land nothing at all that stick out as the raddest of the weekend. Here's a short mix of footage from my top 3 favorites from last weekend.

smurf?

Tolentino is gangster as shit.

And if you really think Evan Smith looks like shit on a skateboard you might wanna go wash your eyes out. There’s probably a gaggle of turds stuck in them things.

Dude is sick.

Gangstershit - Tampa Ham might not be the coolest thing in skateboarding, but if it didnt happen every year you would have no where to skate everyday. But then again, maybe you could go to queens and skate with luis ...

Give it up psyched, Marius and Austyn wouldn’t be caught dead wearing those.  You and I both know that, and both of them were ripping harder then Evan and Luis.

Well, to be honest, I didn’t get to see Austyn skate. I never saw him in practice and I was stuck editing when he skated his runs. The footage from his runs didn’t have him landing too many things, so i didn’t really get a strong sense of his style. The little bit I DID see was really sick. But, again, I wanted to see more and was unable to. But, the dude has enough fanfare around him already. So he doesn’t really need any more hyping.

Marius is obviously really dope to watch on a skateboard. But, again, I didn’t really see him skate much. He was one of those dudes who dropped in between every single skaters’ runs and would lip-slide the very wall or something. Pretty much everybody drops in between runs these days, so it’s no big deal at all, but in the first 5 years of Tampa Am it was kind of only the kooks who would do that and that feeling of annoyance has stayed with me all the way to 2009. Everybody who knows him tells me he’s cool as shit though. I’m definitely a fan of his style and abilities, but all I really saw him do were 50/50s and lipslides on the vert wall.

I got to see Evan and Brad use the whole park and demonstrate a sense of flow that very few skaters seem to have these days. That’s what made me stoked on them. And Luis is just different. His skating and style stood out and his power is unmatched. Say what you want about the stupid Famous Stars and Straps videos of him online “training” for high ollies, his pop on a skateboard is gangster and the dude is from Queens. One of the few NY skaters who’s actually from the city. I’ve got respect for the dude.

Fanfare?

“lipslide the very wall or something”?

27. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 16 at 09:09 AM

Yeah, that’s a hard typo to decipher. Better pull out your decoder ring and call up Dan Brown to figure out that riddle.

Or just switch a letter “t” out for the “y” and spell “vert.

I knew when I wrote “fanfare” that some HILARIOUS cyber-prankster would jump on the opportunity to leave a post with the word in quotations and a question mark.

Theories readers’ favorite technique aside from posting links to dog photos. So creative. So new. So now.

Yeah “fanfare”......look it up.

Not the word itself who the fuck talks about Austyn Gillette? or hypes him up?

30. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 16 at 10:20 AM

Yeah, true, I guess he does ride for a pretty underground and low-profile company. And he’s never had a full part in any big videos and isn’t about to have another full part in a video that he was flown around the world to film for.

You’re totally right.

The dude is obviously amazing. But when all I got to see of him in Tampa was a video clip of him landing two tricks, I can’t really include him as one of my “favorites” from Tampa Am unless I just went on your incessant reminders in my ear of how “sick” he is.

That would be the equivalent of running a photo in a mag that you never landed.

Good point

32. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 16 at 10:37 AM

I think it would be like running a photo in a mag that you never opened, seeing as how you didn’t see him skate

33. by .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on December 16 at 11:24 AM

I saw some footage
