Recently returned from a month of filming in Paris, and London. It was a rad trip. I returned to America feeling like Vietnam after lugging a 50 lb camera bag around 500 yr old streets and slamming onto my already-wrecked filmer’s elbow about 30 times. If you happened to miss the link someone threw up in the comments section yesterday, this seriously bizarre story popped up in Moscow the other day. Also, anybody in the SF bay area should check out our good friend over at Slap Mag, Mark Whiteley, who has a show opening tonight that looks sick.
The thing that catches my attention the most with that Moscow* story is that the cloud was glowing and no matter how hard I think I can’t think of any logical explanation for that. I could see if it was an adolescent tornado in the sky or just by chance an oddly shaped cloud was formed naturally but the fact it was “glowing” and there is no simple explanation for that is pretty startling if you ask me.

Didn’t they say the sun was responsible for the glow? Doesn’t seem too bizarre to have the sun hit a cloud a certain way to make it look as if it was glowing.

Filmers have to take the full impact of a slam onto the elbow of the arm that’s holding the camera.
Unless you’re Pat Stiener and you shot-put a camera 40 ft when you hit a crack while filming, you have to do everything possible to save the camera from getting destroyed.
So, as a result, many filmers, such as myself, have fucked up elbows. Mine has had tiny pieces of bone floating around under the skin for over a decade and slowly more and more of the bone breaks loose.

Who cares what a skater is like off the board, really. Or, rather, who cares what you think about a skater’s personality off the board.
A long as they’re ripping or have something to their skating that is sick and unique, that’s all you can really ask for.
Some of the illest skaters through the history of skateboarding were eccentric human beings off the board.
Need I make a list?….ever heard of Penny? Sheffey? Lennie Kirk? Muska? Gangemi? Renaud? Gall? Stranger?
Danny Renaud drank and spit his own piss on his team filmer. But it didn’t make me like his skating any less. In fact, I think that these colorful personalities make shit a lot more interesting.
But not the douchebags who blatantly TRY to be outlandish personalities because they think skateboarding is professional wrestling or they think acting like rock stars will get them shoe deals and MTV shows. I won’t name names on this one, but pretty much open up a magazine and find any asshole skating in sunglasses and you’ll be off to a good start.

Hindsight is 20/20…..sure you can look back at Muska’s illusion flips and hate on them now. But, at the time, it was not seen that way. It was different and nobody was doing frontside flips on quarter pipes or tranny like that so it was something that had no context to really be judged yet.
It’s like watching “Hocus Pocus” or “Love Child” and hating on the fact that nobody pops their flip tricks. Sure “Jed” popped a kickflip over that curbcut, but nobody else was doing that so at the time there’s no way anybody was judging the quality of the flip, catch or pop in those videos.
