Joel Meinholz was up here in NY over the weekend. And, although we got rained out the whole time, it was a rad stroll down memory lane. I’d forgotten how explosive and improvisational his skating is….how you literally haven’t a clue what he will try and when he will try it. I’ve seen him do a 180 to fakie nosegrind on a massive hubba and purposely land right in front of a speeding bus because he thought it made it a better trick. The dude is a straight up beast.

I decided I wanted to do a part with Joel for the original Static video in 1998 after the first time I saw him skate in person. We showed up on the old gap-to-rail spot (but it was still untouched at this point) in Miami and he proceeded to attack the thing like a wildebeast on steroids. I just recently dug up the raw footage from that session off an old VHS mix tape that I salvaged from my storage unit in Tampa.
Watch how he handled this thing…..this was the very first day and first spot i ever got to see this dude skate.
Keep in mind that the lip-slide, front board, front 50 and nosegrind were all first try.

Yeah, I have no clue what it means either, but it’s the title of a rad video contest created and organized by a good friend of mine and Soy Panday’s in Paris named Arnaud Dedieu. It’s an amateur skate video-making contest held throughout France during the month of September. I was lucky enough to be a judge for the first year they held the contest and now it’s already in it’s third year.
You can watch all the entries and vote for your favorite right here!
So, check it out.

With all of the random filming that occurs w/in a year’s time, it’s simply impossible for every bit of footage to end up getting used in a video. So, a few years go by and you end up with hours of clips stacked up in your hard drive with no place to call home.
Here’s a sampling of today’s clips rescued between the couch cushions of my laptop’s drive space:
Danny Fuenzalida
Ben Gore
Steve Durante
Brian Dale

Here’s a little video piece I just did for the website that covered the “Static III” NY premiere back last October. It’s a profile on the skate-spot Billy Rohan made happen in the lower east side of New York. I can’t wait to read the comments on this one.

May as well keep the napkin theme going since the comments will just turn into a bunch of Floridians arguing with each other in the long run anyways.
One night, while sitting at a bar with Pat Stiener, I drew him an example of what Soy Panday’s graphic idea was going to look like…..Pat proceeded to grab the napkin, make his own alteration and then passed it back to me and said…..”Now that’s a t-shirt graphic”.
